Varieties of discs and attachments for the grinder by the nature of the work
Depending on the type of work performed, the circles for the grinder are cut-off, saw, stripping, stripping, petal, polishing, and there are also discs for cutting seams.
Discs for the grinder can be sawed, cut-off, stripped, petal, stripping, polishing
Cutting wheels carry out cuts and rough cuts of various materials, which is carried out due to the presence of cutting edges. The disk itself has a solid circle or is divided into segments.
The saw blade for the grinder is a kind of cutting wheel. It is designed for cutting wood products. Due to the presence of teeth on the cutting edge of the product, it is possible to carry out a clean and even cut of a massive board, parquet, plywood and drywall. A 125 mm wood saw blade for a grinder can be used for fiberboard, chipboard and laminate. With the help of a saw wheel, it is possible to select grooves in the gas silicate.
The stripping nozzles for the grinder are designed to remove old paint, primer, and varnish from the surface. With the help of such a nozzle, the workpiece is ground. Discs are available in standard diameter and thickness of 3-20 mm.
The angle grinder can be used for cutting seams in asphalt, concrete and stone, which is made possible thanks to a special nozzle for the grinder. To polish the surface, a special emery disc or nozzle with a felt or felt circle is used.
With the help of a disc on concrete, it is possible to cut seams in asphalt, concrete and stone
Cleaning nozzles: petal discs for the grinder and coral circles
A kind of stripping wheel is a stripping disc for a grinder, which is presented in the form of a disc metal brush. This nozzle is designed to remove rust and other persistent contaminants.
For delicate processing of metal workpieces, a coral disk is used. It is made of synthetic fiber material in the form of fiberglass. Such an elastic structure of the nozzle gently cleans the metal surface, penetrating deeply into its structure, without destroying its integrity. This device is most in demand in car repair work, where it is used to remove paint and varnish from the car body without damaging the metal layer. The material being cleaned does not clog the porous base of the disc.
Petal circles for the grinder are also referred to as stripping nozzles. They are used for processing products made of wood, plastic, metal, for removing rust, stripping welds and burrs. The petal circle is a plate fixed on the lap circumference – according to the principle of a petal flower.
There are several varieties of the petal nozzle, which is represented by an end, a package product and a circle with a mandrel. The end disc is designed for conventional flat processing or at an angle. It can be straight or conical. The first option is used for grinding large surfaces, and the second is necessary for finishing seams and joints.
The stripping disc for the grinder is a disc metal brush
The batch petal disc is designed for grinding large areas. When working with cavities, a stripping wheel with a mandrel is used, thanks to which the maximum accuracy of workpiece processing is achieved.
Discs for the grinder: characteristics of the cutting wheel
The most popular type of discs for the grinder is a cutting nozzle. It is represented by a circle with a hole inside, which is reinforced with a special metal ring for reliable fixation of the element on the spindle of the USM.
There are two types of cutting wheel – abrasive and diamond. On the working surface of the first version of the disc, particles of abrasive material are applied, which are interconnected by means of a binder. A reinforced mesh made of synthetic material is applied on top of such a coating, thanks to which the strength properties and safety of using the equipment for the grinder are increased.
Important! During operation, the surface of the disc gradually wears off, so a nozzle with a wear of no more than 35% is suitable for effective operation.
The most popular disc for the grinder is considered to be a cut-off
The abrasive disc has an affordable price. Circles for the grinder are presented in a wide range and can be used to work with metal, wood and stone. However, the disk wears out quickly. This is accompanied by the release of sparks during its operation, which can cause a fire. When working with a metal cutting disc for a grinder, an unpleasant smell occurs, which takes a very long time to fade, which makes the tool inconvenient to use indoors.
How to choose an abrasive cutting disc for a grinder
Abrasive crumbs have a certain level of granularity and hardness, which determines the quality of surface treatment. It can be formed from various materials, as will be evidenced by the marking of the product. Zirconium corundum (“A”), electrocorundum (“AS”), silicon carbide (“C”) can act as an abrasive.
Discs for the grinder 115-230 mm (diameter) are available, their thickness is 1-3.2 mm. The size of the inner ring is 22.2 mm. The size of the circle is selected depending on the type of tool.
Useful advice! The most popular option, which is designed for household chores, is a universal metal cutting disc for a 125 mm grinder.
Abrasive cutting discs for the grinder have a diameter of 115-230 mm and a thickness of 1-3.2 mm
The choice of disc thickness depends on the type of metal. For aluminum and thin steel, a circle up to 1.5 mm in size is used. For fittings and dense metal products, it is advisable to use a disc with a thickness of more than 2.6 mm.
Based on the characteristics of the disc, we can say that the smaller the thickness of the cutting circle, the faster the cut is carried out, since the small area of the blade helps to reduce its resistance. Thin nozzles heat up less and provide a smoother and cleaner cut, but such discs wear off faster.
Useful advice! Thin discs are best suited for low-power earphones that are not designed for long-term operation.
Differences of cutting discs on metal, wood and stone
Cutting nozzles are classified according to the type of material being processed. There are discs for the grinder on stone, metal and wood. The first two options are no different in appearance. In order to choose the right consumable, it is necessary to carefully consider the marking applied.
The cutting disc on the concrete on the cutting edge is coated with diamond chips
The differences between the discs are in the type of abrasive material used and the composition of the main circle.
125 mm metal cutting discs (and other standard sizes) are manufactured in several stages. Initially, the process of mixing the resin with the main substance, as which cobalt, electrocorundum or diamond is used. Then special additives are introduced into the composition. The finished mass is poured into the mold. A ring made of galvanized steel is placed in the central part of it. The edge of the disk is reinforced with a fiberglass mesh. The mold is placed in an oven, where the product hardens under high pressure for 24 hours.
Important! The surface of the disc for the metal grinder 125 (and other sizes) has a blue color.
The disc for the grinder on concrete and tile is made in the same way as for metal. There are options made of galvanized steel. A feature of the products is the presence of a diamond crumb coating on the cutting edge of the circle. The size of the abrasive varies between 0.2-0.8 mm.
Cutting discs on wood can be both toothed and chain
Discs for woodwork have small teeth and a sharp edge around the rim of the product. The edge is covered with tungsten carbide. The teeth can have a straight, beveled or trapezoidal design. The first option is used for needles and soft woods. The latter type of product is used for processing medium-density material. A disk with alternating beveled teeth is a universal option.
Characteristic features of the cutting diamond disc for the grinder
A diamond cutting wheel is a steel disc with a cutting part on which diamond chips are applied, and expansion slots throughout its entire area. They act as teeth, thanks to which heat is removed and deformation stress is reduced. The slots are arranged strictly symmetrically, which eliminates vibration of the disk during operation. The mass of the diamond chips is also balanced in diametrically opposite directions, which ensures high quality and uniform cutting.
Diamond particles are embedded around the rim of the circle. They cover the rim of zinc, tin, nickel or cobalt alloys. The method of fixing diamonds determines the purpose of the circle. When using electroplating technology, such discs are designed for processing products made of soft natural stone. If laser welding or sintering is used, the circle can be used for any type of solid material.
A diamond disc for a 125 mm grinder and other standard size can have a surface grain from 50 to 3000.
A diamond disc for a grinder can have a surface grain from 50 to 3000
The diamond disc has a number of distinctive advantages over a simple abrasive wheel. It has greater productivity, durability, performs high-quality and accurate cutting and shows great resource indicators. When working with it, no sparks are formed, there is no strong smell.
Important! The diamond disc can be used on the USM with a speed of 12,000 rpm, but it can withstand 13900 rpm, which is typical for professional machines.
Such a circle is afraid of overheating, so it is necessary to take breaks when working with it. When using an unsegmented diamond disc for a 230 mm grinder and a smaller diameter, it is necessary to provide additional cooling with water. The disadvantage is also the high price of such consumables.
What are the discs with diamond chips on the surface
For the edged diamond wheel for the grinder, monocrystalline (in the form of solid spatial structures of the correct shape) or polycrystalline diamonds can be used, which consist of several single crystals of small size, firmly interconnected. Discs on concrete for a grinder of 230 mm and smaller diameter, equipped with the first type of material, can be used for cutting hard materials, since they are more durable.
The surface of diamond circles for the grinder has a different color, for example, orange ones are intended for plaster and brick
Important! A diamond disc for a concrete grinder can be used to carry out a rectilinear cut, since with a curved trajectory of movement, the disc can lose diamonds or completely collapse.
Artificial diamonds on the rim of the disc can have a uniform distribution or be placed with a certain period. The latter option is more productive. Such discs provide less effort on the tool, contribute to uniform load distribution and more efficient cooling.

The outer surface of the diamond circles for the grinder may have different colors. Based on the decoding of the disc colors, the blue frame has nozzles for concrete and marble, gray – for ceramic products, green – for granite, yellow – for ceramics and gypsum, orange – for plaster and brick.
Classification of diamond discs by concrete for the grinder, depending on the structure
Diamond wheels are mainly designed to work with non-metallic materials. They are used for cutting ceramics, concrete, glass, asphalt and bricks. There are also diamond discs on metal for the grinder, which can process thin material.
Segmented diamond discs have dividing slots of the same size
Diamond nozzles differ in structure, depending on which they are divided into solid, segmented, turbo and turbo-segmented. The first type of circle is equipped with a solid cutting tape, which is located around the circumference. Artificial diamonds are applied on it in several rows. Such discs are used for the grinder on tiles, ceramics and other materials for which the accuracy of cutting is important.
Segmented circles have dividing radial slots of the same size on several working sections. This type of diamond disc is more resistant to temperature and mechanical loads, provides greater productivity. However, the cut is not as accurate as when working with solid disks. In addition, they have a higher cost. This nozzle is designed to perform deep cutting of concrete structures.
A distinctive feature of diamond turbo discs is the presence of an oblique notch on the sides of the rim, thanks to which the mechanical strength of the circle increases. It also helps to increase the intensity of heat removal, which allows you to speed up the cutting process by 75-100%. The turbo disk can be used for fast cutting of various mineral materials of different hardness.
The most productive circles are turbosegmented disks. The rim is divided into segments with a side notch turbo.
The presence of an oblique notch on the sides is a distinctive feature of turbo discs
Diamond discs for concrete grinders are also distinguished by the method of application – for wet and dry cutting. The first type of product has a solid solid surface. Before starting work, it should be moistened with water. When making a disc, bronze or cobalt is applied to its cutting edge. The first option is used for cutting granite and quartz, and the second one is used for tile and drywall.
The dry cutting discs have a surface divided into several segments around the perimeter. Diamond teeth are welded to the end of each strip. Such a circle shows increased resistance to overheating. Despite this, it should not be operated for more than 3 minutes. This disc is designed for cutting stony and concrete material.
Characteristics of grinding discs for the grinder
Grinding wheels are used to process the surface of the product. The working part of the disk can be made of boron and silicon carbide, quartz, spherubins or spherocorundum. The grinding nozzle has the shape of a bowl or circle with protruding plates, on the surface of which a special material is applied.
It can be diamond chips for rough stripping, sandpaper with varying degrees of grain for pretreatment, nylon threads with a special coating, which are used together with special pastes for more thorough grinding. Fabric, felt, felt or foam rubber can be fixed on the grinding nozzle, so it is used for polishing the surface.
The working part of the grinding disc can be made of quartz, boron and silicon carbide, spherubins and spherocorundum
Useful advice! For processing a large area, grinding logs or rounded sections, a cone-shaped nozzle is used.
There are two types of discs on the grinder for grinding: abrasive and petal. The first option is intended for rough processing. It carries out grinding of solid irregularities that appeared as a result of melting of welds, large burrs formed during cutting or chopping of metal workpieces. The abrasive grinding wheel can be used to sharpen the tool. The petal type of grinding disc is used for finer processing. It acts gently, polishing the relief surfaces.
Useful advice! For rough processing of natural wood, a chain disc for a grinder can be used, which ensures high work productivity.
When choosing a grinding disc, the main role is played by the grain size of the nozzle. The higher it is, the thinner the surface will be polished. Circles with a value of 40-80 are designed to perform preprocessing. To level the surface, nozzles with a grain size of 100-120 are used. Finishing grinding is carried out using 180-240 circles.
Grinding discs for metal with a value of 40-80 are designed for pretreatment
Diamond polishing discs may have a grain 50, 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000.
Features of a wood grinding disc for a grinder
For the finishing of natural wood products, various types of nozzles are used, which are represented by wire brushes, stripping, emery, end and petal circles.
To remove the top layer from solid wood, paint or paintwork from the surface, stripping discs for the grinder are used, which also help to level the surface of the boards. The products are equipped with special spikes located on a flat surface of the disk, or a crumb.
For rough processing of wood, a cord brush is used, which removes all irregularities from the surface in a matter of seconds, preparing it for finishing grinding. The abrasive nozzle is represented by a disc with metal bristles in the form of a wire, which is located along the perimeter of the circle or perpendicular to its surface. The second option has the form of a brush.
For wood processing, stripping, emery, end and petal discs are used
Important! For wood processing, circles with thin wire should be chosen, which is not capable of damaging the workpiece itself.
To align the edges of the wooden workpiece, which is required when it is cut obliquely, an end circle is used, which provides a result comparable to the surface treatment with a file.
The blade grinding disc for the grinder 125 mm and other diameter is characterized by the widest range of use. The nozzle consists of trapezoidal petals made of sandpaper of varying degrees of grain, which overlap, overlapping by ¾ of each other. Such a disk is characterized by a slow degree of wear.
Useful advice! If a wooden surface with a complex relief is being processed, it is advisable to use a petal nozzle, in which the abrasive elements are arranged radially.
The petal grinding disc is used for a very wide range of jobs
The nozzle may have a different surface abrasiveness, as a result of which a different degree of grinding is carried out. The gradual transition from a coarse-grained nozzle to a finely dispersed one allows you to achieve the effect of polishing the workpiece.
Circles for soft grinding with a polishing effect are presented in the form of replaceable Velcro products with different degrees of grain, which are characterized by high functionality. Such nozzles are made of fabric, felt, foam rubber or felt.
The latter option is the most common. It provides the most even, smooth surface without the formation of roughness, which can be compared with a mirror. Such a nozzle is made of pressed material of fine-wool, semi-coarse-wool or coarse-wool origin.
Typical disk sizes and product markings
For the correct choice of the disc for the grinder, the outer diameter of the nozzle should be taken into account, which should not exceed the maximum permissible value for a specific model of the USM. Otherwise, unpleasant consequences may arise. A small power grinder simply will not be able to work with a large tool. Installing a larger nozzle will require removing the protective casing, which is a serious violation of safety regulations when using the tool.
For the correct selection of the disk, it is necessary to take into account its outer diameter
When the grinder is running, on which too large a circle is installed, the linear speed will be overestimated. This is fraught primarily with injury to the master and destruction of the abrasive disc.
They produce discs for the grinder in sizes 115, 125, 150, 180 and 230 mm. In this case, the products may have different thicknesses: circles of 115 mm differ in size 1; 1,6; 2; 2,5; 3; 3,2 mm. Discs for concrete grinders 125 and 150 mm, depending on the above values, are made with a thickness of 0.8 and 1.25 mm. This indicator for a 180 mm circle is within 1-4 mm, and for 230 mm grinder discs – 1.6-4 mm.
For low-power angle grinders, a circle with a diameter of 115 mm is purchased. Edged, grinding and saw blades for 125 and 150 mm Bulgarians are suitable for medium-power units. Professional tools should be equipped with 180 and 230 mm circles. The landing diameter of the disc of any size is 22.2 mm.
Useful advice! When using an outdated model grinder, you will need to use an adapter in the form of a ring.
For Bulgarians with low power, discs with a diameter of 115 mm are installed
Any abrasive wheel, regardless of the type of product, has a special marking that contains information about the diameter of the disc, its thickness, the size of the seat, the maximum speed of rotation. Also, the material for which it is intended to be processed is indicated on the disk. The interpretation of the inscriptions is as follows: “metal” – metal, “concrete” – stone and concrete, “steel” – steel, “aluminum – aluminum, non-ferrous metals and alloys, “inox” – high-alloy and stainless steel, “castiron” – cast iron and cast parts.
Important! Disks on a vulcanite bundle can work at a speed of 50-80 m/sec, on a bakelite – 80-100 m/sec.
Material for the manufacture of discs for the grinder on metal, wood and stone
Discs for the grinder for cutting and grinding can be made of various materials. Depending on this criterion, abrasive, carbide and diamond circles are distinguished. Abrasive products are made of dense waterproof latex paper, which is reinforced with fiber or mesh. A layer of abrasive material is applied on top of it, which can be used as aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, corundum or tungsten carbide. The binder component for the abrasive is a polymer or resin.
Abrasive wheels are represented by stripping, cutting and stripping products. A fiber grinding disc is also available, which comes complete with a support plate made of rubber or plastic. It plays the role of a stop and helps to cool the abrasive. Such a circle is used for processing workpieces made of wood, concrete, ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Aluminum oxide, zirconate or ceramic grain is used as an abrasive.
Discs for the grinder can be abrasive, carbide and diamond
Useful advice! Fiber abrasive wheel is an ideal solution for rough removal of old paint from walls, facades and other surfaces.
The carbide circle is made of metal. The rim is made of high-carbon molybdenum steels with the addition of nickel or chromium. Such circles are represented by cutting discs for cutting metals. At the same time, a disc for the grinder is selected separately for aluminum, stainless, thin, high-carbon steel.
The diamond circle is made of steel, on top of which a diamond coating is applied. Such discs can be cut-off, grinding and polishing. They are designed for processing any metal, concrete, natural or artificial stone, glass, ceramics. This nozzle is used as a disc for a ceramic granite grinder. The diamond disc provides an accurate thin cut.
A kind of diamond nozzle is a polishing wheel on a flexible base, the surface of which has a corrugated structure in the form of a turtle shell. Such a flexible disk is fixed on a hard rubber base with Velcro.
Abrasive discs can be stripped, cut-off and stripping
There are also poppet or support discs for the grinder. The bases of the nozzles are made of rubber or plastic. They are used in conjunction with some variants of grinding, polishing, stripping wheels.
How to install the disc on the grinder correctly
Circles are consumables that have to be changed periodically. To do this, you should know how to properly put the disc on the grinder. The circle is attached to the tool spindle by means of a clamping flange. To choose the right horn wrench, you need to know which thread is on the grinder. This value is equal to M14.
To replace the disk, it is necessary to de-energize the tool. The grinder spindle is fixed to the front of the housing using a button. When it is pressed, the stopper enters the landing hole of the circle installed in the gearbox, thanks to which the spindle is fixed in a stationary position.
The pins of a special horn wrench must be inserted into the holes on the clamping flange. The key turns to the left while holding the lock until the nut moves, after which it is unscrewed and removed manually.
To replace the disc, it is necessary to de-energize the grinder and unscrew the clamping flange
Useful advice! The clamping flange is unscrewed in the direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the tool shaft.
If it is necessary to clean the inner cavity of the grinder casing, the lower flange is unscrewed. Dirt is removed using a steel brush. The lower flange is put in place in such a way that the grooves on the flange and the spindle are combined. A sealing gasket is put on top, which will further ensure easy unscrewing of the clamping nut. A new disc is installed in such a way that the marking of the product is facing outward.
A gasket is placed on the circle. The flange is manually screwed onto the shaft and clamped with a horn wrench for no more than ¼ turn, so as not to deform the disc.
Important! It is not allowed to remove the protective casing from the grinder, since this device will prevent the occurrence of traumatic situations in the event of a breakdown of the circle during its operation.
The pins of the special key must be inserted into the holes on the clamping flange and turned to the left
What to do if the clamping flange is jammed
There are often situations when, when processing a thick, durable material, the tool gets stuck in the workpiece. In this case, the disc breaks, and the rotating spindle tightens the flange tightly. There are several methods for unwinding the USM.
The first method involves the use of two gas keys. When working with the tool, do not make much effort, as this may damage the spindle lock. The lower flange is clamped with one key, and the upper one with the other. At the same time, the tools are rotated in different directions.
If the lock is broken, the gearbox must be disassembled to remove the disc from the grinder. To do this, unscrew the mounting bolt. The cover together with the shaft is removed from the ear. Then you should clamp the shaft in a vise and unscrew the flange with a gas wrench.
You can use the thermal method, which involves heating the nut with a construction hair dryer, blowtorch or gas burner. The heated element is easier to unscrew by using a standard key for the grinder.
To avoid jamming of the clamping flange, it is necessary to use a special nut
If the above methods did not work, the abrasive wheel for the grinder will have to be ground. To do this, using pliers, it is necessary to remove the fragments of the disk. A piece of sheet metal is clamped in a vise. Its thickness should correspond to the size of the disk. Next, the grinding of the remains of the circle on the end part of the metal workpiece is carried out.
Useful advice! To quickly grind the damaged circle into a vise, an abrasive disc can be clamped.
It is possible to loosen the clamping flange with the help of a special liquid WD-40, which must be watered at the junction of the element with the shaft. After 5-7 minutes, the fasteners can be unscrewed with a standard key.
The modern grinder is one of the most popular tools with which you can perform different processing options for blanks made of metal, wood and stone. Depending on the nature of the work, a certain type of disk is selected, the diameter of which should correspond to the type of tool, which will be the key to an efficient and safe workflow.
